Overview

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology and Systems Physiology (PSP). Our goal is to advance the fields of basic and applied physiology and pharmacology by engaging in innovative biomedical research. We provide our students with a challenging and supportive environment to pursue academic and professional careers in the biomedical sciences.

Physiologists and pharmacologists alike are curious about the ability of molecules to contribute to cell function, the ability of cells to contribute to tissue function, the ability of tissues to affect organismal function, and ultimately the effects that therapeutic agents have on these systems. Physiology is the science that integrates simple mechanisms into complex systems, and pharmacology uses this knowledge to support the development of the next generation of therapeutic agents.

PSP Happenings

Third annual Kranias Symposium on Early Career Mentorship

Apr 2024 – The Symposium will be held May 21st and will feature a keynote lecture "iPSC-based modeling of heart disease for drug discovery" by Dr. Mark Mercola (Stanford University) from 12:00 to 1:00 (5051 MSB). Lunch will be provided.

Honors for PhD candidate Alyshia Davis

Apr 2024 – Davis (Reyes lab) was selected by her fellow students to be the Distinguished Student Speaker at the 2024 Kranias Symposium on Early Career Mentorship (May 21).

Apr 9, 2024 – Dr. Baljit S. Khakh (UCLA) presented his work on “Astrocyte diversity in neural circuits: identity, form and function”.

Mar 27, 2024 – In the Department of Internal Medicine Research Symposium, Abdulaziz (Conforti lab) received an honorable mention for his poster "KCa3.1 channels regulate NK cell tumor infiltration in head and neck cancer”.

Congratulations to PhD student Immaculata Osuji!

Mar 27, 2024 – Immaculata presented her winning poster “Eosinophil regulated necrosis in murine model of eosinophil associated heart disease” to the Ohio River Valley Cytometry Association.
